Deployment of Shadows in the Service of a Blue Line

A 5 mile chalk line was drawn from Elliott Bay to Lake Union in Seattle, by asking pedestrians to “help connect the two bodies of water” – everyone asked contributed to the concept in a good spirited way! Deployment of Shadows creates an ephemeral blue line of chalk from Elliott Bay to Lake Union. The three day marking of definitive path time is a collaborative experience using the body with timed choreography. marking public space with memory and subtle spectacle. This work is supported in concept by the DaDa action of inserting artists into public space to question a site with a group mentality as a poetic and individual force.

This performance aims to create drawing as an action, a physical aesthetic tool to transform routine nomadic spaces of the contemporary city experience.

Japanese Noh has a tradition of silent support roles as ‘shadows” a band of nameless persons who provide support on stage clad in a black costume, this important role is seen and understood by the audience as a shadow support to the main character, this same spirit has been co-opted with Blue Line, as the line appears and is constructed with the assistance of shadows in its brief, temporary life.
