Coule Dans Les Veines | Flows in the Veins Tazeen Qayyum

Art Gallery of Mississauga, 2012

Coule dans les Veines (Flows in the Veins) is the Canadian launch of Ciels – a one-of-a-kind Artist Books created in collaboration with the poet and novelist Nanni Balestrini, and published by Gervais Jassaud of ‘Collectif Generation’ France. Jassaud has been publishing artist’s books for over 40 years in which the visionary creates an international collaboration between a relevant contemporary writer and artist. The poems within the books are in French and Italian, however with Tazeen Qayyum’s invitational presence, the texts begin to resonate and function within a coded universal language. Qayyum states, “My work on these books creates a dialogue with Nanni’s poems, as it comments on our lived environment today, the aggressive global politics and the many emotional challenges that one faces.

A strong exhibition record marks this artist’s dedication to her practice. Qayyum’s work was included in the 10th Asian Biennale, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2002), 2nd Painting Biennale, Tehran, Iran (2002) and has been featured at the Sotheby’s and the Christie’s South Asian Modern & Contemporary Art Auction in New York (2008-9). Qayyum was also awarded a UNE SCO bursary (2000) to work and exhibit in Vienna. The XIT-RM is project space dedicated to new ideas and artists, as well to this exciting generation of regional talent. We are fortunate to have this voice in our presence. Tazeen Qayyum commands us to reflect upon the important issues of our time.

A world traveler and global citizen that continues to assist us to observe, ponder, and encourage us to think. Ultimately, her drawings are centered on war, destruction and the “foibles of humanity”. This collaborative publication project marks a North American debut – is reflective of Qayyum’s vision, and concerns which are to instigate conversation and dialogue on this topic.
