Uncanny

Art Gallery of Mississauga, 2013

Uncanny brings together a group of emerging and mid-career artists whose work examines the image with photography and contemporary investigation of digital practices.   The artists in this exhibition have an investigative outlook and continue to be informed by historical process of the image in a contemporary and thought provoking way. Sound, Video, Photography and the viewers own memory provide a digital based platform for exploring the metamorphosis of the uncanny.

Originally, the uncanny is a term that psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud used to describe a psychological feeling of between terror and fascination. Here, the uncanny’ derives terror from something familiar as opposed to the unknown. Because the uncanny is familiar and strange at the same time, a feeling of unease and a state of “curious coincidences” occurs. The uncanny is ghostly, odd, supernatural & mysterious leaving us feeling shaken in a state of wonderment and in a state of utter fascination.
